KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs parted ways with veteran defensive back Dunta Robinson, who never quite lived up to expectations last season, and signed CFL wide receiver Weston Dressler on Friday. Robinson was just one year into a $13.75 million, three-year deal that the Chiefs hoped would provide a veteran presence in what became a vastly retooled defensive backfield. Instead, Robinson was slowed by a series of nagging injuries and appeared in only nine games, making 14 tackles and defending just two passes. He was also part of a defence that was torched by Indianapolis wide receivers in a loss that knocked Kansas City out of the playoffs. The move was widely expected not only because the 31-year-old Robinson struggled most of the season, gradually losing playing time to undrafted free agent Marcus Cooper, but also because the cash-strapped Chiefs would save more than $3 million. The Chiefs were bumping along the just below the salary cap at the beginning of the week, and theyre expected to make more moves -- perhaps restructuring some of the long-term contracts signed by the previous regime -- so that they can sign their draft class and be active in free agency. Kansas City is expected to lose Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert, who was franchised last season, though there are several in-house candidates to replace him. Offensive linemen Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz are also hitting free agency, as are defensive tackle Tyson Jackson, safety Kendrick Lewis and Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster. The move to sign Dressler, who spent the past six years in the CFL, could be in response to McCluster likely demanding a contract far more lucrative than the Chiefs are willing to pay. Dressler, a former North Dakota standout, caught 442 passes for 6,531 yards and 43 touchdowns for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, helping them win the Grey Cup this past season. Hes also proven that he can return kicks and punts, in essence many of the things McCluster did for the Chiefs. "Ever since the first time I touched a football, thats something I dreamed about, having an opportunity to play in the NFL, on the games biggest stage," Dressler said during a recent news conference, when he was released by Saskatchewan and finalizing a deal with an NFL team. It was unclear at the time that his landing spot would be Kansas City. "To kind of get to that point now is pretty surreal," Dressler said. The Chiefs didnt announce Dresslers signing until Friday, even though his name popped up on the leagues transaction report earlier in the week. Terms of his deal were not available. "Money wasnt a factor for me in this decision," Dressler said. "Its a decision based on an opportunity I feel like I have a very good chance to make a football team." The Leafs were back on the ice Wednesday following an 10-day break. It apparently wasnt long enough, as Team Canadas 2-1 win over Latvia didnt conclude before the Leafs began practice. "I was thinking we might get a little delay, but it was nice to get out there," said Tyler Bozak of watching Wednesdays game. Two weeks ago, fans threw their jerseys onto the Air Canada Centre ice following the Toronto Maple Leafs seven-goal loss that capped a three-game skid. Three straight home victories have changed the mood a bit. Toronto continues its homestand while looking to deal the Dallas Stars a third consecutive defeat Tuesday night. The Maple Leafs (12-8-3) were forced to answer questions about their inconsistency and the job security of coach Randy Carlyle in the wake of a 9-2 loss to Nashville on Nov. 18. Theyve gone 3-0-1 since, though, and tied their highest-scoring output of the season in Saturdays 6-2 win over Washington to begin a five-game homestand. Toronto also has defeated Tampa Bay and Detroit at home while falling at Pittsburgh in overtime Wednesday during its hot stretch. It is in the midst of playing 11 of 13 at Air Canada Centre, where it is 7-2-0 since dropping four of its first five. Home games are great to have, but youve got to win them, Carlyle said. To have success, youve got to take advantage of the schedule when it comes your way and sets you up for some home games. Youve got to take advantage of it. Tyler Bozak scored twice - once on the power play - against Washington and has five goals and two assists during a four-game point streak. Its nice. The puck is kind of following me around a little bit, playing confident and linemates are making great plays for me, Bozak said. Hopefully, it can keep going for a bit. The Leafs also hope their power-play unit will continue clicking. Toronto went 1 for 23 with the man advantage over its previous six before going 3 for 4 against the Capitals. It was nice to see that our power play finally came to life and create some offense for us, Carlyle said. I thought we played half the game the way we wanted, and then we kind of got away from our game, but how do you critique a 6-2 win? Forward Leo Komarov will not play as he recovers from concussion symptoms from being hit by Alex Oveechkin in Saturdays game.dddddddddddd Richard Panik will take Komarovs spot in the lineup. Dallas coach Lindy Ruff criticized his club after it allowed the final three goals in Saturdays 5-2 loss to Colorado in the first stop on a three-game road trip. The Stars (9-10-5) rallied from a three-goal deficit the previous night against Minnesota before falling 5-4 in overtime, ending a three-game winning streak. They end their trip at Detroit on Thursday. I thought we were totally embarrassed, Ruff said. What we did with the puck and how many giveaways and how many turnovers, it was pathetic. Weve got to wipe it clean. Look at what is ahead of us. I dont buy back-to-back games or lack of energy. Our effort wasnt good enough. We got outworked. Jamie Benn had another solid game, though, assisting on Cody Eakins first-period goal. He has three goals and seven assists during a three-game point streak. Benn had a goal and three assists in Dallas 7-1 home win over Toronto in the most recent meeting Jan. 23. Bernier gave up three goals on 13 shots before being pulled, and James Reimer allowed four on 14 shots. Bernier has a 2.23 goals-against average while starting each of the last four games. Kari Lehtonen, who won his previous three starts before losing to Minnesota, could be back in net for Dallas.
