MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- For Mark Richt, the first nine months back at Miami have been hectic. The first order of business was assembling a staff and salvaging a recruiting class. Then came legal issues for a handful of players, though none of those matters will have a decided effect on the season. That was followed by a probe into players having access to luxury rental cars, which led to Miamis top three tacklers from a year ago being jettisoned.Plus, there was the small matter of figuring out what he had for a football team. Our coaches and players have really just done all we can do, Richt said. Now its time to go line up and play -- and see what we got.In other words, finally, football.Miami opens its first season of the Richt coaching era Saturday night at home against Florida A&M. The Hurricanes new coach will be calling plays, something he hasnt done in a decade and a decision he says has energized him in ways he didnt expect. And hell be relying on quarterback Brad Kaaya, who would unquestionably be considered Miamis most important player. Its something weve all been looking forward to since last December, honestly, said Kaaya, who turns 21 on Saturday. Im just eager to get out there with this team to see what we can do and put on film.Kaaya said he had trouble sleeping this week, his mind loaded with dreams about what Saturday will be like. Richt said he expects to experience some sleeplessness and nerves as well.First time I called plays in the scrimmage in the spring, I didnt sleep that night, Richt said. Wired. Excited. The same applies now to his homecoming. Richt graduated from Miami in 1982.On the other sideline Saturday, theres going to be some homecomings as well.Florida A&M has no shortage of players from the Miami area, and Rattlers coach Alex Wood is a former Hurricanes assistant -- helping the team win two national titles during his time in Coral Gables.Itll be fun to go back, said Wood, who was 1-10 in his debut season at Florida A&M a year ago. They dont play at the Orange Bowl anymore like they did when I was there, but we are, and I am, looking forward to it.Most of Miamis unanswered questions going into the opener are on the defensive side of the ball, especially after Al-Quadin Muhammad and Jermaine Grace were dismissed from the program after an investigation found violations related to the rental-car matter.Miami native Manny Diaz, the Hurricanes new defensive coordinator, offered a succinct answer about how a defense overcomes depth issues.Unbelievable effort, Diaz said, and unwavering violence.---Heres some of what to know going into Saturday night:HONORING THE PAST: Richt wont be the only Miami alum getting cheered Saturday. The Hurricanes invited Ray Bellamy -- the first black player to receive a football scholarship from Miami back in the late 1960s and now a longtime academic advisor at Florida A&M -- to serve as an honorary captain. And Hurricanes grad Sam Dorman, a diving silver medalist at last months Rio Olympics, will be recognized in an on-field ceremony after the first quarter.AT RUNNING BACK: Joe Yearby rushed for 1,002 yards for Miami last season, but Mark Walton -- who had some off-field and now resolved legal issues overshadow his offseason -- earned the starting job. Miami also gets back Gus Edwards, who missed last season with injury.WHATS IN A NAME?: Miami plays at the the newly canopied, newly renamed Hard Rock Stadium. The Miami Dolphins home has been renamed every three years, on average, since it opened in the 1980s so confusion is understandable. Is it Pro Player Stadium? Hard Rock Cafe Stadium? Wood asked, before being told what the actual name is. For the record, it hasnt been Pro Player Stadium since 2005.FOR OPENERS: Richt will try to become the sixth consecutive Miami coach to win his opening home game with the Hurricanes. Also Friday, the Hurricanes announced that theyve sold more than 40,000 season tickets for 2016.THE HISTORY: Florida A&M is 1-9 all-time against Miami, losing the last nine matchups. The lone Rattlers win came in 1979, when Richt was a backup quarterback for the Hurricanes. Since then, the Hurricanes have outscored the Rattlers 441-56 -- an average of 49-6. Their most recent meeting was 2014, a 41-7 Miami victory that was the first of Kaayas collegiate career. Andre Roberts Jersey . -- Bryant McKinnie came out of his stance and lowered his shoulder into a practice squad player, causing a crisp thud to reverberate in the Miami Dolphins practice bubble. Doug Flutie Jersey . -- Matt Ryan needed one of the best games of his career to lead the Falcons and their depleted offence out of their three-game losing streak last week. http://www.shoptheofficialbills.com/Elite-Tremaine-Edmunds-Bills-Jersey/ . The Dutchmans tenure got off to a poor start when referee Guido Winkmann awarded a penalty within two minutes for Niklas Starks clumsy challenge on Alexandru Maxim. Jim Kelly Youth Jersey . Nigeria beat surprise package Ethiopia 2-0 in the second leg of their playoff for a comfortable 4-1 aggregate victory. Victor Moses converted a 20th-minute penalty after an Ethiopian handball, and Victor Obinna made certain of Nigerias place in Brazil with his powerful free kick in the 82nd at UJ Esuene Stadium. Cody Ford Youth Jersey . The (11-11-4) Jets are seventh in the Central Division with 26 points. Fifth place Dallas and sixth-seeded Nashville also have 26 points, but the Stars have three games in hand on Winnipeg while Nashville has two. DENVER -- Carlos Gonzalez homered and drove in two runs, Jorge De La Rosa pitched effectively into the sixth and the Colorado Rockies beat Arizona 4-1 on Wednesday to take two of three from the Diamondbacks. Dexter Fowler had two hits in his first start in the cleanup spot and Nolan Arenado added an RBI double as the Rockies caught Arizona in the standings. The Diamondbacks entered the day tied with San Francisco for first in the NL West. De La Rosa (6-3) kept up his mastery against Arizona at Coors Field, improving to 8-0 with a 1.38 ERA. He struck out five and allowed six hits in 5 1-3 innings. Relievers Edgmer Escalona and Matt Belisle bottled up Arizona to get the ball to Rex Brothers, who closed the ninth with Rafael Betancourt sidelined by a groin injury. It was Brothers first save of the season. Trevor Cahill (3-5) didnt have his best stuff early, but found his groove and made it through six innings, allowing four runs. Cahill has allowed four earned runs or fewer in 28 straight starts, which is the longest active streak in the majors. Gonzalez hit Cahill hard all afternoon, giving the Rockies an early lead when he sent a fastball over the right-field wall in the first. The player nicknamed CarGo drove in another run with a triple two innings later. Manager Walt Weiss went with a rather unorthodox lineup, moving the speedy Fowler from his usual leadoff spot to cleanup. Weiss figured he would give Fowler a chance with Troy Tulowitzki receiving a rest day. Fowler finished 2 for 4 with a double and scored a run. There was some drama in the sixth when Fowler sent a high fly to right that appeared to hit off the wall in fair territory. But first base umpire Doug Eddings ruled it foul, which brought Weiss out to discuss the call. The umpires briefly huddled on the field and headed in to look at the play, even though the hit in question didnt appear to be a home run (only home runs can be reviewed). Television replays confirmed that Eddings made the correct call as a distinctive white mark was left on the green wall where the ball hit..dddddddddddd Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, the Diamondbacks scored a run when Wil Nieves double to left-centre brought in Cody Ross, who led off the inning with a single. De La Rosa got Josh Wilson to fly out to prevent any further damage. De La Rosa also worked his way out of a jam in the third after allowing a double by Cahill and walking Didi Gregorius. Paul Goldschmidt hit a soft roller to third to end the threat. The hard-throwing De La Rosas start on Wednesday had some personal significance. It was nearly two years to the day when he tore a ligament in his elbow pitching against the Diamondbacks at Coors Field. He later underwent Tommy John surgery. He said it was a long journey back, but De La Rosa appears on the right track. He lowered his ERA this season from 3.58 to 3.40. Even though Tulowitzki is hitting .406 at home this season, Weiss elected to keep his shortstop out of the starting lineup. Its all part of the plan to keep Tulowitzki healthy for a full season. Theyre agreeing on dates he will rest -- and sticking to it, no matter if he went, say, 2 for 4 with a homer like he did Tuesday night. "We both knew coming into the season we had to do it this way," Weiss said. "I dont want to get into a situation where we say, Well, he had two hits last night, Im going to change my mind. Thats a trap. "Of course, I want Tulo out there for 162 games. Who wouldnt? But we knew we were going to have to be smarter than that coming in. Who plays 162 games, anymore?" Notes: Arizona OF Adam Eatons rehabilitation stint in the minors was shut down after he felt soreness in his injured elbow. Eaton felt discomfort in the left elbow during an appearance with Triple-A Reno on Monday and was returning to Phoenix to be examined by team doctor Michael Lee. ... Arizona and Colorado both have Thursday off. ... Weiss didnt have any update before the game on Betancourt, who left in the 10th inning Tuesday with a tight right groin. Betancourt had an MRI on Wednesday. ... It was Gonzalezs 11th homer of the season. ' ' '
