adjust by being better, and ultimately being worse, Duffey said
WATERLOO, Ont. -- Angela Stanford and Hee Young Park both put up birdies on their first three tries at the 18th hole at Grey Silo Golf Course on Sunday. Stanford finally blinked on the deciding playoff hole and Park kept her birdie streak alive for the victory at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. Both players tied the LPGA Tour record for lowest total score at 26-under-par 258. It would take three playoff holes -- all on the 471-yard, par-5 finishing hole -- before Park ended the drama by hitting a short putt for her second career LPGA Tour victory. "When we started (the) final round, I just kept reminding (myself) this is just another round," Park said. "It doesnt matter (if its the) final round or a first round, keep it simple and just think about always (hitting) my target." She hit the target when it counted, reaching the green in two on the deciding hole. Stanford, meanwhile, needed three shots to get on the back fringe and her long birdie putt ended up a few feet short. Park hit her 45-foot eagle putt to within a couple feet of the cup. She hit the birdie, raised her fist in the air and later threw the ball into the grandstand surrounding the green. The effort capped a remarkable week by the 26-year-old South Korean, who recorded a career-best 61 on the par-71 course a day earlier. Stanford closed with a 7-under 64 while Park, who had a one-shot lead on the American after three rounds, had a 65. "If somebody would have told me youre going to shoot 64 today and not win, I would have thought they were crazy," Stanford said. "So for me to shoot 64-64 on the weekend, you know, its good for me but its not a W, so you play to win." Scotlands Catriona Matthew had a 66 and settled for third place at 23 under. South Koreas Inbee Park (68) finished well back at 16 under as her three-tournament winning streak came to an end. Hamiltons Alena Sharp (65) was the top Canadian at 11 under. Matthew made a move early in the round. She picked up her third straight birdie on No. 7 to move into first place, leaving Stanford and Park a shot behind. The trio quickly moved ahead of the pack as they approached the turn. Matthew birdied No. 11 and 12 but a bogey on the 15th hole snuffed her momentum. Stanford had seven birdies over a bogey-free round while Park went on a tear with three birdies over her last four holes heading into No. 18. That set the stage for a showdown that would last about an hour. Sitting tied at 25 under after 71 holes, Stanford reached the green in two and hit a two-putt for birdie. Park pushed her approach shot wide and hit a nice chip from beside the grandstand to within four feet before draining the birdie putt to force a playoff. The players hopped into golf carts and returned to the tee to keep playing the hole until there was a winner. Park had a chance for eagle on the first extra hole, hitting a beautiful approach that bounced once before settling eight feet from the cup. She pushed her eagle putt wide and settled for birdie. Stanford chipped on from beside the fringe and hit a short putt for a birdie of her own. On the second playoff hole, both players landed in the first cut beside the green. Stanford went first and chipped it within three feet and Park did the same before both players hit their putts. Stanford was unlucky on the third playoff hole as her tee shot found the rough and settled into a depression. "By far the worst lie I had all week," she said. She used a four-wood to get out but didnt hit it clean, with the ball landing in a fairway bunker. Stanford did well to get it to the back fringe but with Park already laying two, Stanford needed to chip in to force the issue. When her ball settled a few feet from the hole, Park had the opportunity to go up and down for the victory and she took advantage. "I did everything I could, it just wasnt enough," Stanford said. Park earned US$195,000 for the win. Stanford picked up $120,353 of the $1.3-million tournament purse with the runner-up finish. Scores were low for all four rounds as players took advantage of wide fairways and greens that remained moist after heavy rain earlier in the week. South Koreas Meena Lee (66) was fourth at 20-under and Karine Icher of France (63) was another shot back in fifth place. American Michelle Wie closed with a 66 to finish tied for 16th place but was still 11 strokes off the pace. "Its pretty crazy that you shoot 15 under and youre not in the top 10, you know," Wie said. "Its a birdie-fest out there." American Brittany Lang won the inaugural edition of the event in 2012 but missed the cut this year by one stroke. Sharp finished one stroke ahead of Brooke Henderson (67) of Smiths Falls, Ont. Charlottetowns Lorie Kane (68) and Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., (69) were next at 9 under. Park, 26, earned her only other LPGA Tour victory at the 2011 CME Group Titleholders. Stanford was looking for her sixth LPGA Tour victory and first since the 2012 HSBC Womens Champions. Karen Stupples also had a 72-hole score of 258 at the 2004 Welchs/Frys Championship in Tucson. That tournament was played on a par-70 course. Annika Sorenstam recorded a 27-under-par 261 at the par-72 Standard Register PING event in Phoenix in 2001. Notes: Japans Momoko Ueda and Americans Ryann OToole and Nicole Hage qualified for the next major based on their 36-hole scores here. Two other qualification spots went to tiebreakers. Ji Young Oh of South Korea qualified based on her 54-hole score and Englands Felicity Johnson had a 66 on Sunday to beat American Kris Tamulis for the final spot. LOUIS -- Valtteri Filppula assisted on three of Tampa Bays four goals, and the Lightning beat the St. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Alex Gordon has been battling most of the season to raise his average above .200. Now he is the hottest hitter on the American Leagues hottest team.Gordon hit a grand slam, Dillon Gee pitched seven strong innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1 on Thursday night. The Royals have won five straight and eight of nine to move above .500 for the first time since July 22. Royals starting pitchers have a 1.61 ERA in the five-game winning streak, allowing 23 hits and six earned runs in 33 2/3 innings, while striking out 27 and walking seven.Gordon, who was hitting .199 with 16 RBI on Aug. 9, extended his hitting streak to a season-best nine games, hiking his average to .219. Gordon has homered in three consecutive games.I was probably trying to do too much, trying to get out of a slump, which its hard not to do, Gordon said. Im just trying to stay with the basics and put together good at-bats and luckily its been happening a little bit more lately.Gee (5-6) picked up the Royals first victory from a No. 5 starter since May 31. The Royals are 9-21 is games started by the fifth starter.I felt like I was throwing everything pretty good tonight, Gee said. I had command of the off-speed stuff and the fastball command got better throughout the game. I just felt like a lot more free and easy. The curveball was good, the slider was good. It was just a good night.Gee, who is 3-6 in 10 starts, gave up a home run to Brian Dozier on his third pitch. It was Doziers 14th career leadoff homer and his 27th for the season. He has homered in five straight games against the Royals. That was the only run Gee would allow as he limited the Twins to four singles after the home run, walked one and struck out seven. Gees seven innings were a season high.He didnt throw too many heaters, Twins left fielder Robbie Grossman said. He really kept us off balance, threw hiis off-speed for strikes.dddddddddddd That was a key for him.Twins right-hander Tyler Duffey (8-9) retired the first 10 hitters, but only one of the final seven batters he faced before being removed by manager Paul Molitor. After Cheslor Cuthberts single with one out in the third, Duffey walked three and hit a batter with Gordons third career grand slam punctuating the inning. Duffey was replaced by Michael Tonkin after 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs.I think I tried to adjust by being better, and ultimately being worse, Duffey said. Just kind of missing arm side with a fastball, then I end up yanking a curveball and then the one that Gordon hit out wasnt necessarily a good pitch to hit. It just went right into his swing path. And then, giving up a grand slam, thats what happens when you walk a guy and hit a guy. Thats a really good lineup. I gave them some chances and they took full advantage of it.The Royals added three runs in the eighth with Kendrys Morales and Eric Hosmer both driving in a run. The other run scored on a throwing error by center fielder Eddie Rosario.Cuthbert had three of the Royals seven hits, bringing his hit total to 100, which ranks second among AL rookies.TRAINERS ROOMRoyals: LHP Jason Vargas, who has not pitched this season after Tommy John surgery in July 2015, made his third rehab start Wednesday, giving up three runs and four hits, including two home runs, in 2 1/3 innings for Northwest Arkansas against Corpus Christi. He threw 42 pitches, 27 for strikes, while striking out one and walking none.UP NEXTTwins: RHP Jose Berrios yielded six runs, eight hits and a walk in two innings in his previous start, a 15-7 loss to Houston.Royals: RHP Edinson Volquez is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three 2016 starts against the Twins.
