Former five-star cornerback Kendall Sheffield hasnt been with the Crimson Tide for the past couple of days and his status is uncertain, according to Alabama coach Nick Saban.Saban told reporters on Tuesday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, that Sheffield was in the mix to be the defenses third cornerback this season, behind projected starters Marlon Humphrey and Minkah Fitzpatrick. He said that the team would be happy to have him back.Wed like for him to be part of the program if thats what he chooses, Saban said.ESPN rated Sheffield as a five-star prospect coming out of Missouri City, Texas, in 2015. He committed to Alabama over Texas A&M, Florida State and LSU.Sheffields absence comes on the heels of the high-profile transfer of former Tide cornerback Maurice Smith, another native of Texas who followed former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart to Georgia.Alabama initially blocked Smiths choice of schools, citing an SEC policy against transfers within the conference. Last week, however, Saban released Smith and passed the matter along to the SEC, which granted him a waiver to go to Georgia, where as a graduate student he will be eligible to play immediately. In addition to Smith, several underclassmen have left the program since the end of last season, including Daylon Charlot, Adonis Thomas and Christian Bell.Speaking on the subject of transfers earlier this month, Saban said that he and the staff do not take an adversarial position against players who want to leave.Theres never been a player that has left this program that I havent tried to talk into staying. Not one, he said. Because I really do think its in the best interest sometimes of the player to overcome the adversity that hes faced with. And I understand theres a lot of pressure on these guys sometimes externally and they get a little fearful of their future and that creates a lot of anxiety and sometimes they think that changing their environment is going to help that. In most cases, I dont know if it does.Saban said that there is no cutoff date for Sheffield to return to the team.
