CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR will resurrect its series in Mexico behind new title sponsor Peak, an automotive products company seeking to boost its profile. The rebranded NASCAR Peak Mexico Series will mark its return with an exhibition race in Mexico City in December. The series plans to run a full championship schedule next year. The announcement Tuesday night in Mexico City was attended by Daniel Suarez, who used the series as a starting point that led to his current ride with Joe Gibbs Racing.Suarez is tied for the lead in the Xfinity Series championship. He spent four years racing in NASCAR Mexico and won 10 races before graduating to the national series level. Hes the first Mexican driver to win a national series race and lead a national series in points. While Suarez was winning races in the United States, the series he had competed in was dormant. NASCAR had operated a Mexico-based stock car series from 2004 to 2015 in coordination with the Mexican promoter OCESA. NASCAR will operate the series in 2017 with former driver Jimmy Morales as the promoter.NASCAR Executive Vice President Steve ODonnell said Tuesday night he believes the series is in a good position to be stable with the sponsorship and promoter partnerships. The future of NASCAR in the United States is going to be reliant on the Hispanic fan base, growing the sport outside of the United States as well, ODonnell said. The success we saw in Mexico with the drivers, particularly Daniel Suarez, we felt like we were just on the cusp of really growing things in Mexico. ... It wasnt a question of if [we will return] for us.We knew how important this market is to the future of NASCAR. It took us a little longer to put everything together, but to have a successful partnership, sometimes that does take time.Morales, president and CEO of motorsports representation company Escuderia Telmex-Telcel, has managed Suarez in his move from Mexico to NASCAR racing in the United States.Jimmy knows what it takes to be successful for a driver through what weve seen with Daniel, ODonnell said. Thats the model he wants to set up is what was the learning curve we had with Daniel, what did Daniel help us learn as well where we could make some improvements and put that together with this partnership.ODonnell said he envisions the series will have 10 races next year. While it has raced at Phoenix International Raceway in the past, ODonnell said he doesnt anticipate a return there in 2017.Well concentrate on Mexico [next year], but the goal really for the series is to be home base for Latin America, and the drivers who aspire to get into the [NASCAR] national series level would come here and compete, ODonnell said.NASCAR Mexico also has helped the development of Ruben Garcia Jr., who has three career Xfinity Series starts, and German Quiroga, who has 53 starts in the Camping World Truck Series.Lou Garate, vice president of partnership marketing for NASCAR, said he believes the return of the series in Mexico will bolster the popularity of stock car racing and provide opportunities for aspiring drivers and crew members. We want this to be a base, and if you can make it in NASCAR Mexico, you can make it in the U.S., Garate said.NASCAR Mexico did not run this year as NASCAR reassessed the program after nine seasons. The return was aided by the multiyear agreement with Peak, a division of Old World Industries that has a lengthy association in auto racing.Information from ESPNs Bob Pockrass and The Associated Press was used in this report. Joe Saunders pitched seven efficient innings and Nick Franklin and Justin Smoak each homered to lift the Mariners to a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. Seattle won four of six on its brief road swing, taking two of three against both Texas and Cincinnati. "It was a real good road trip," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. Smoak added to the lead to allow the veteran Saunders room to work. "Smoak is one of those that the light is coming on. To drive the ball the other way, shows he is getting better," Wedge said. Smoak is more concerned with driving in runners in scoring position than home runs. "Its been dreadful getting runners home from scoring position," Smoak said. "Thats number one for me. I feel great at the plate but it I need to get those guys across home plate." The third-year first baseman was hitting .133 with runners in scoring position when the game started. The Reds broke up the shutout bid in the seventh with back-to-back one-out doubles by Todd Frazier and Heisey before Saunders finished his day by getting Ryan Hanigan and pinch-hitter Derrick Robinson to ground out. "Heisey hit a good pitch," Saunders said. "(Pitching coach) Carl (Willis) came out and just said, refocus and keep the ball down. Thats what I did. I used my sinker." Bronson Arroyo (7-7) overcame a 32-pitch first inning to complete six, allowing five hits and three runs with one walk and six strikeouts. He retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. Neither Arroyo nor his manager Dusty Baker were surprised by the show of power by the youthful Mariners. "It didnt surprise me," Arroyo said. "They had a bunch of unknown guys. We dont see a lot of the American League, especially the West. They came out and hit the ball out of the ballpark." "We knew coming in that that would be a key," Baker said. "Home runs are a big part of their offence. We couldnt get anything going. We hit the ball a lot harder than the scorebook showed. We didnt have a lot to show for it."
