stic.I have no idea [how we bounce back], but
PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germains attack bailed out its shaky defense in an unconvincing 3-0 win against Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday.By the time winger Angel Di Maria scored five minutes before halftime, the visitors had already missed several chances in a match more even than the result suggested. Better sides would have punished PSG.We conceded a few chances because of bad positioning. Our defense wasnt always in place, PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot said. You need some luck in this type of game.Brazilian striker Lucas netted in the 62nd minute with his seventh goal of a productive season, and striker Edinson Cavani added a third with an injury-time penalty for his 13th goal in 11 games.Finishing aside, it was sloppy stuff from a PSG side with its sights set on winning the Champions League for the first time.It was a very difficult game for us, particularly at the start, Lucas said. Our second half was much better. The result, which keeps PSG level on seven points with Group A leader Arsenal, was ultimately harsh on a Basel side that looked slick and impressive going forward, yet can also only blame itself for hitting the post three times from close range. Were going home empty-handed and that hurts, Basel coach Urs Fischer said. Basel should have been 2-0 up but that makes no difference in the end.Di Marias goal ended a barren run of 17 games without a goal for club and country. He smashed the ball into the roof of the net following good work from Blaise Matuidi down the left. It was his first goal since scoring for Argentina against Chile at the Copa America in June, and first for PSG since the League Cup final against Lille on April 23.Lucas guided the ball into the bottom right corner from just inside the area following a cross from the left by Serge Aurier. With the clock running into injury time, Cavani was tripped in the penalty area and slammed the spot kick down the middle. All well-taken goals but the first half highlighted PSGs limitations rather than showcasing its credentials as a Champions League contender -- and the way PSG players celebrated with enthusiasm in front of their fans was somewhat misplaced.Basel, not a European force by any reckoning, clearly exposed PSGs defensive fragility on set pieces and new coach Unai Emery still has much work to do to make his French team a compact unit.We will work to do better, Emery said. But its a question of the defense and the attack, to improve the positioning of our players in order to improve our balance.Having led Sevilla to three straight Europa League titles, the Spaniard was hired over the summer to take PSG further in the Champions League.PSG has gone out at the quarterfinal stage in the past four seasons. But on this evidence, PSG looks some way off being a contender. The first half wasnt good, thats the truth, Emery said. It was easier at 1-0 because our opponents opened up.With PSG midfielder Thiago Motta sidelined, there was little protection in front of the defense, and Basel poured into the space. With the inexperienced goalkeeper Alphonse Areola unable to properly command his back four, crosses were poorly dealt with.If you count the chances, we should have had at least a point, Fischer said. We showed that we could put PSG in danger at home.Basel right back Michael Lang headed against the crossbar in the fifth minute after a corner to the back post was nodded back by Iceland midfielder Birkir Bjarnason.Moments later, attacking midfielder Renato Steffen sprinted clean through, drawing a fine save from Areola. Although the rebound came to him quickly, Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia should have kept his shot down.Just before Di Marias goal, Doumbia headed against the post from another cross.Moments after Lucas scored, Basel hit the woodwork again through Czech center back Marek Suchy.Arsenal thrashed Bulgarian champion Ludogorets 6-0 to go top of the group on goal difference. After a first half in which he thought "the lid was on the basket," the Toronto Raptors coach watched his squad mount a second half surge to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 98-91. Fake NFL Jerseys Online Kevin Harvick wasnt in much of a mood to talk about his back-against-the-wall, clutch-race-winning ability on Sunday afternoon. Hed just completed a frustrating 500 laps -- make that 498 laps, two laps down -- at Martinsville Speedway, where he finished 20th.He has had worse finishes in Chase for the Sprint Cup races this year, but this marked the first time Harvick probably finished where he deserved. He had a speeding penalty early in the race, but that didnt impact his finish. The rare just-missed-it kind of day has put Harvick in a 16-point hole from the current Chase cutoff. Sure, Harvick has faced must-win situations and moved on in the past and Phoenix (where he has won five of the last six and six of the last eight) follows this weekends race at Texas, but how many times can he snatch wins and save his season?Harvick was asked about the challenge Sunday, how he views his chances of making up the points or earning the win necessary to be one of the four drivers with a shot to win the championship in a couple of weeks at Homestead-Miami Speedway.I havent really looked at it, Harvick said. We will see.And then he walked away. Now heres what makes Harvicks challenge possibly even greater: He might not get much help from his Stewart-Haas Racing teammates. None of them comes off Martinsville feeling all that well and none has any momentum that Harvick can feed off of this weekend at Texas.Kurt Busch, who also is still alive in the Chase, finished 22nd and sits 18 points behind the current Chase cutoff.Tony Stewart finished 26th at Martinsville -- after appearing fairly stout in practice -- and remains 14th in the standings in his final season.Danica Patrick was 24th, and sits 23rd in the standings. We were slow all weekend, Harvick said about Martinsville. We could just never get the handle on it.If there is any good news for Harvick and Busch, its that nothing from the short-track Martinsville correlates for the next couple of tracks.Harvick said hhe will try to focus himself and not the other Chase competitors.ddddddddddddIts really about being intense in our own little bubble, he said in a news release. I know, for us, it seems like there is more to navigate than there was last year just for the fact that weve had so many things go wrong up to this point.Weve been fortunate to win a couple of races, but it seems like every other week weve had to navigate something or work through something to get the best finish we can. Hopefully, we can clean all those things up and do a little better over the final couple weeks.Busch sounds a little less optimistic.I have no idea [how we bounce back], but we will figure something out, Busch said. We came all this way, we wont give up now.Harvick already has won two Chase races this year after round-opening frustrating events. He won at New Hampshire the week after losing a lap early at Chicagoland. And he won at Kansas after a Charlotte race where an oil pump seal came apart.Hell have to dig deep again now at Texas, where he started 22nd and finished 10th earlier this year. Busch was ninth. They most likely need top-5 finishes or other drivers to have trouble to enter Phoenix with a shot to advance by points instead of facing a must-win situation. They at least have the solace of knowing theyre not the worst off among the Chase finalists. Carl Edwards had a tire issue at Martinsville that relegated him to a 36th-place finish, and he sits 32 points behind the Chase cutoff. Were going to continue to give it our best and go after it, Busch said. A win would be wonderful. But still, at the same time, guys like Carl Edwards [also] had trouble last weekendMy teammate Kevin Harvick, we all struggled at SHR. But you never know whats going to happen when you go into the next race. You go business as usual, but [with] not too much stress. ' ' '
