MESA, Ariz. -- No matter what the record says, Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein insists he sees progress as he begins his third season in charge. It hasnt shown at the major league level. "The people that we have in place in this organization -- the coaches, scouts -- I believe are impact, and I believe in the processes that we have in place," Epstein said Thursday. "It takes time to turn our organization around. It takes time to build impact talent and to build requisite depth. But its happening. People in those meetings, the people in this organization, really believe that were on the verge of something special. And we understand that were perceived otherwise, and thats our fault because weve been a last-place club the last couple years. Were not protesting. We need to earn our way into a position where were championship contenders on an annual basis, and we feel like that is certainly moving in the right direction." It hasnt been an easy process, and while success might be on the horizon, it doesnt appear to be at hand. Pitchers and catchers reported on Thursday, and for the Cubs, it doesnt look like much will be different this season. They were relatively quiet in the off-season, although they did hire manager Rick Renteria to replace the fired Dale Sveum and made a run at star Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, but mostly it looks like they are in for more rough times at the major league level as they wait for their top prospects to develop in the minors. Their most recent winning season was when they went 83-78 under Lou Piniella in 2009. With four straight sub-.500 seasons, theyve matched their longest streak since 1984 to 1988. And another losing season would put them on their longest run since they finished below .500 six years in a row from 1978 to 1983. For now, the Cubs continue to sell hope, a promise that better days are coming. They tout their minor league system, and while renovations to Wrigley Field remain on hold, they can point to new facilities in the Dominican Republic along with a spring training home that just opened. As for the Cubs record, it cant get much worse. Theyve dropped 91 or more games each of the past three years and are coming off a two-year run under Sveum that produced a 127-197 record. Theyre hoping Renteria will provide the right atmosphere for young major league players such as shortstop Starlin Castro and first baseman Anthony Rizzo as well as top prospects Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, Albert Almora and Kris Bryant. They believe they have three solid starters in Travis Wood, Jeff Samardzija and Edwin Jackson, although Jackson struggled last season and Samardzija is a potential trade chip after he was unable to reach a long-term agreement and took a one-year deal. Jake Arrieta, a candidate to start, might not be ready for the beginning of the season because of tightness in his right shoulder. General manager Jed Hoyer revealed Thursday that Arrieta, acquired from Baltimore last July, experienced some tightness this winter and is being brought along slowly. Hoyer announced Arrietas injury after confirming the Cubs agreed to one-year contracts with starting pitchers Jason Hammel and James McDonald. Both could be candidates to be traded before the deadline if they succeed, considering thats exactly what the Cubs did with Paul Maholm and Scott Feldman the past two seasons. "We know we have some numbers now," Hoyer said. They also have hope that better days are coming. "Theres a real dichotomy between how the organization is perceived from the outside and how we look at it internally and the morale that we have internally," Epstein said. NOTES: Renteria tabbed newcomer Jose Veras as the closer. ... Hoyer basically dismissed the idea of moving Castro to another position even though he and the White Soxs Alexei Ramirez led major league shortstops with 22 errors last season and Baez is in the pipeline. "Castros our shortstop," Hoyer said. "We have all the confidence in the world that hell remain our shortstop and hell keep working hard and keep improving. And he knows theres (room) to improve there." ... Hoyer said reliever Kyuji Fujikawa will soon start throwing off the mound. Hes coming off Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow. ... Epstein said the Cubs will look to draft pitchers going forward, although not necessarily with their first pick. NEW YORK -- The grievance to overturn Alex Rodriguezs 211-game suspension began Monday before arbitrator Fredric Horowitz. The New York Yankees third baseman was wearing a business suit and accompanied by lawyers when he arrived for the session at Major League Baseballs headquarters in midtown Manhattan. A three-time AL MVP, Rodriguez was suspended Aug. 5 for alleged violations of baseballs drug agreement and labour contract. Because hes a first offender under the drug program and the players association filed a grievance to force an appeal, a suspension cant start until it is upheld by an arbitrator. The union argues the discipline is without just cause and is excessive. If the case doesnt settle, a decision by Horowitz is expected this winter. Rodriguez was among 14 players penalized by MLB this year following the sports investigation of Biogenesis of America, a closed anti-aging clinic in Coral Gables, Fla., accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. The others accepted their penalties, including former NL MVP Ryan Braun, who missed the seasons final 65 games. Biogenesis head Anthony Bosch was at the hearing to testify -- a publicist released a photo of him in a hallway outside MLBs conference rooms. In Florida, state authorities said they had started a criminal investigation of the clinic. "A subpoena was issued for documents, and we are looking into several areas of state interest," said Ed Griffith, spokesman for Miami-Dade County State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. Existence of the state prosecutors criminal subpoena was disclosed at a recent hearing in MLBs lawsuit in Miami against Biogenesis, also pending in Miami-Dade County court. Its not known whom the subpoena targeted or what specific documents are being sought. A federal probe involves the sources of drugs the clinic is accused of selling to players. It did. With just a hint of a draw, Johnsons shot landed to the right of the right-side pin and spun to 2 feet to set up a birdie Thursday that left him two strokes behind first-round leader Patrick Reed in the Humana Challenge. Thriving on great driving, even better wedge play and putting, Johnson has three worldwide wins in his last seven starts. He began the run in the BMW Championship in September, and beat Tiger Woods in a playoff in December in the World Challenge after holing a wedge for par on the final hole of regulation. Johnson followed that with a victory two weeks ago in Kapalua. "I dont think Im the best," Johnson said when asked if hes the best wedge player. He pointed to Ryder Cup teammate Steve Stricker. "Hes the first one that comes to my mind," Johnson said. "Phenomenal wedge player. ... But my wedges are clean. ... Ive worked on it a lot. Ive worked on it in a number of different ways, but the main way is really just trying to dial in yardages and trajectories." Johnson finished with a 7-under 65, hitting all 14 fairways at La Quinta Country Club -- the most-demanding driving layout in the three-course event. He hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation and had 27 putts in his bogey-free round. "The greens over there are, I dont even know how to explain them, its like carpet," Johnson said. "I mean, theyre just so good. I dont know what they do over there, but they look artificial. Theyre like this every year, but theyre as good as Ive ever seen." Johnson has 11 PGA Tour victories. Dating to his rookie season in 2004, only Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh have more. "It means that Im doing something right," said Johnson, the top-ranked player in the field at No. 6. Reed had a 9-under 63 in perfect scoring and weather conditions. He ran off five straight birdies in the middle of his bogey-free round on PGA Wests Arnold Palmer Private Course and tied his career low. "The course is in perfect shape," said Reed, the Wyndham Championship winner in August. "The rough isnt very high, the fairways are perfect and the greens are rolling very true." Reed started on the back nine and birdied Nos. 16-18 and 1-2 to get to 7-under. He added birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. "I started ouut a little struggling with the driver, had some lefts in it, but luckily I missed it in the right spots," Reed said.dddddddddddd "I was really confident with my irons, kept hitting greens and all of a sudden, 10-, 12-, 15-, 20-foot putts started going in." With wife Justine pregnant with their first child, her brother, Kessler Karain, is subbing as Reeds caddie. Justine has walked every hole with her husband this year and plans to rejoin him inside the ropes after the baby girl arrives. The due date is Memorial Day. "We cant wait for that," Reed said. "Im excited to be a dad." Ryan Palmer, Justin Hicks, Daniel Summerhays and Charley Hoffman shot 64. Palmer birdied his final six holes and nine of his last 12 on the Palmer course, the site of the final round Sunday. "I wasnt making a whole lot of long putts, just hitting it close," Palmer said. Hicks had an eagle, seven birdies and a bogey on the Jack Nicklaus Private Course. "Just trying to give myself as many opportunities as I can," Hicks said. Hoffman, the 2007 winner, had an eagle and six birdies at La Quinta. "I love this golf course," Hoffman said. "I think this is probably one of the better tracks we play all year when its said and done." Summerhays birdied seven of his last 10 on the Nicklaus course. "Its fun to make birdies," Summerhays said. "Thats one of the fun things about this tournament is that the courses are a little easier. Theyre in perfect shape, which makes them almost even easier." With a high temperature in the mid-80s and only a gentle morning breeze off the Santa Rosa Mountains, the players averaged 69.692 on the Palmer course, 69.431 on the Nicklaus layout, and 70.192 at La Quinta. Ottawas Brad Fritsch carded a 67 at the Palmer course. David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., also on Palmer, had a 68. Calgarys Stephen Ames and Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., each shot a 73 on the Palmer course. Keegan Bradley opened with a 69 at La Quinta in his first start of the year. Hes fighting a cold and struggled with his distance control and accuracy. "Im still a little tired. Getting better every day," said Bradley, paired with Johnson the first three days. "Im happy with todays round for the first round of the year." Defending champion Brian Gay also had a 69 at La Quinta. New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors overcame a late fourth-quarter deficit and got hot in overtime to extend their franchise- record winning streak. Stephen Curry had 34 points, seven rebounds and seven assists as the Warriors beat the Anthony Davis-less New Orleans Pelicans 128-122 for their 16th straight The Warriors became the ninth team in NBA history to begin a season 21-2. Klay Thompson netted 29 points, while Draymond Green added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Golden State, which has also won 10 consecutive games on the road. Tyreke Evans posted 34 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Jrue Holiday tallied 30 points, nine helpers and five steals for the Pelicans, who were without Davis due to a chest contusion suffered Friday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Curry capped an 8-1 spurt to begin overtime with a 3-pointer to stake Golden State to a 119-112 advantage and it never trailed by less than four the rest of the way. Dante Cunninghams layup staked the Pelicans to a 107-99 advantage with 4:16 remaining in regulation before the Warriors responded with an 11-2 run to take the lead. Marreese Speights layup capped the surge and gave the Warriors a 110-109 edge with 1:34 left. Evans was fouled at the other end and gave New Orleans the lead back with 1:22 to play and Curry turned the ball over on Golden States next touch. Evans step-back jumper from the right elbow, though, was off the mark. Speights was fouled on a putback attempt with 43.5 seconds to go and split the pair for a 111-111 tie. Earlier, the Pelicans led 31-28 following a quarter of play, but the Warriors outscored them 32-20 in the second and took a 60-51 cushion into the break. New Orleans outscored Golden State 38-29 in the third and the game was tied 89-89 after three as Jeff Withey nailed two free throws in the waning seconds of the period. ARLINGTON, Texas -- There will be a new coach sitting to the right of Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington during games next season, someone else for him to hug after each victory. The Rangers said Wednesday that they will not renew the contracts of bench coach Jackie Moore, who has been in professional baseball 56 years and at Washingtons side through two World Series, or first base coach Dave Anderson. "These are not decisions we take lightly or make easily," general manager Jon Daniels said. Speaking on a conference call with Daniels, Washington said the decisions were made after "many, many, many" hours in meetings Tuesday, a day after the Rangers finished a 91-win season with a 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay in the AL wild-card tiebreaker game to miss the playoffs for the first time in four years. "As an organization we wanted to move forward in a different direction," said Washington, 611-524 in his seven seasons as the Rangers manager. When speaking to reporters Tuesday, Washington had said he intended on having all of his coaches back in 2014. Moore and Anderson had been on Washingtons staff the past five seasons. Pitching coach Mike Maddux, hitting coach Dave Magadan, third base coach Gary Pettis and bullpen coach Andy Hawkins are all expected to return next season. The 74-year-old Moore was in his fourth stint as a Rangers coach. He began playing professionally in the minor leagues in 1957 after graduating from high school in Houston, though his 11-year playing career included only 21 major league games for Detroit in 11965.dddddddddddd What became a normal occurrence after Rangers victories was Washington turning to Moore and the two sharing a hug. They celebrated together after the Rangers won their only two AL championships in 2010 and 2011. "Jackie is a family member of mine and of course Im going to miss him," Washington said. "This is not something that we take lightly. My heart is aching, but as anything else, Im a baseball man and well get through it." Daniels said the organization was working to put together a list of candidates for both positions, and expects to look to people both in and out of the organization. Daniels said the new bench coach doesnt necessarily have to have managerial experience. "I just long for a guys that prepared. ... Looking for a guy thats in synch with me sitting on the bench and my thought processes," Washington said. "Im looking for a guy thats total baseball." Anderson was also the teams infield instructor and was charged with organizing spring training for Washington. He was the third base coach for four seasons before the manager switched Anderson and Pettis on the bases last winter. With Moore gone, will Washington turn and hug his new bench coach after the first victory in 2014? "I really hope so, but that between me and Jackie is something that he and I created," Washington said. "I dont know how Im going to react. But if I react and I decide I want to hug the guy next to me, I hope he welcomes it. If he dont welcome it, then Ill shake his hand." MILAN, Italy -- Mario Balotellis stunning late winner secured a 1-0 victory for AC Milan against relegation-threatened Bologna in Serie A on Friday. Balotelli fired into the top far corner from 35 metres in the 86th minute. The result will be a welcome boost before the first leg of Milans Champions League last-16 tie against Spanish league leader Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. "I think that was the goal of the season," Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani said. "It was very difficult to score and it was an incredibly powerful, explosive effort. When you have great champions they can win the match for you with one shot. Im going to watch it over and over again tonight. "Bologna was difficult to beat and we won it with a great bit of play from a great champion like Mario. Balotelli has to gain continuity but he has everything to become a great champion." Milan had the majority of the possession and should have taken an early lead but Bologna goalkeeper parried Riccardo Montolivos effort. Kaka was back from a bout of flu which kept him out of last weeks 3-1 defeat at Napoli, and the Brazilian lined up alongside January signings Keisuke Honda and Adel Taarabt, just behind Balotelli. Bologna had the best chance of the first half though, and Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati did well to fingertip Rene Krhins header over the crossbar in the 22nd minute. "I dont like this Milan side," Bologna coach Davide Ballardini said. "Once upon a time it was a squad made up of champions who would help the team and now it doesnt seem to me to be like this anymore. "I would like to coach a player like Balotelli. He has the makings of the champion, but to become a real champion he needs other things as well." Rod Brind Amour Jersey . ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- The second period was costly for the St. Johns IceCaps on Saturday. Peter Mannino made 31 saves and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton got goals from three different skaters as the Penguins edged the St. Johns IceCaps 3-2 in Game 1 of the American Hockey League Eastern Conference final. "We only had four or five shots in the second period and thats not enough," said IceCaps forward Andrew Gordon. "We need more zone time and offensive opportunities, (especially) second chance opportunities. We didnt create that in the second period. We were a little too easy to play against and not physical enough." Gordon had a pair of goals for St. Johns, while Michael Hutchinson stopped 29 shots. Chuck Kobasew, Conor Sheary and Tom Kostopoulos scored for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said his team lost its focus, ultimately costing St. Johns the game. "We got off our game in the second period, we made mental errors and didnt have the intensity you need to have in the conference finals," said McCambridge. "At the end of the day, the second period hurt us." No one was blaming Gordon for the loss. After the wingers two-goal effort on the night, coach McCambridge was left wishing the rest of the team had followed Gordons example. "You have to make sure that when you have opportunities you capitalize, and when you put pucks to the net, you are looking for second and third chances. Andrew Gordon did a really good job on that," McCambridge said. "When we had good chances in the second period, we got away from that. Theres not a lot of space out there, (the Penguins) defend really well. " The Penguins opened the scoring 7:02 into the game, when Kobasew finished off a 2-on-1 in front with an easy tap-in from a perfect Brian Gibbons pass. Gordon tied it for the IceCaps at 13:42 of the first period, pulling the puck out front from behind the net before sniping it top shelf on the blocker side. Sheary put the Penguins ahead 2-1 when Hutchinson lost the puck on a wrist shot by the winger. Sheary continued to the net and tapped in his own rebound 2:32 into the second period. Kostopoulos took a pass while entering the zone and scored a quick wrist shot high blocker with 5:24 left in the second period to put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton up by two goals. With the teams playing 4-on-4, Gordon scored his second of the game, one-timing a face-off win from John Albert, to pull the IceCaps within one 5:31 into the third period. John Albert also scored for the IceCaps, who won the best-of-five series 3-1. Jon Merrill replied for the Devils, while Keith Kinkaid made 29 saves. Gordon opened the scoring for the IceCaps 3:47 into the game. He tapped home a loose puck in a crease-scramble after Jason Jaffray tried to score from the side of the net and pushed the puck into the crease following Kinkaids initial pad save. BALTIMORE -- A two-game series that was scheduled to end Wednesday stretched into early Friday morning before Matt Wieters finally put an end to the rain-marred interleague matchup between the Pirates and Orioles. Wieters led off the 10th inning with a home run off Stolmy Pimentel to give Baltimore a 6-5 victory and a doubleheader sweep Thursday night. In the opener, Steve Pearce had three hits and two RBIs in his return to the Orioles, who got a home run from Nick Markakis in a 5-1 win. The single-admission doubleheader followed consecutive rainouts Tuesday and Wednesday. The rain lingered long enough to delay the fifth inning of the opener by 21 minutes, and the start of the nightcap was stalled 46 minutes by rain. The second game lasted 3 hours, 57 minutes. By the time it ended, the clock had ticked well past midnight. "Its not a late night, its an early morning," said Orioles reliever Darren ODay, who pitched in both games. As ODay spoke, the team had 30 minutes to get ready for a trip to Minnesota for a three-game series that was to begin Friday night. "It will be a happy flight," ODay said, "so that will make it a little easier." The second game marked the season debut of Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, who had left knee surgery in October. After sitting out the opener, Machado received a warm ovation from the crowd of 28,290 before the second game and went 0 for 5. Baltimore trailed 4-0 in the nightcap before rallying with a four-run sixth. Adam Jones doubled in a run and scored on a single by Wieters before Pearce chased starter Brandon Cumpton with a double to right. Bryan Morris entered and yielded a two-run double to J.J. Hardy. Starling Marte countered with an RBI single in the seventh for Pittsburgh, but Markakis tied it in the bottom half with a solo shot off Morris. Wieters won it in the 10th with a drive to right off Pimentel (2-1) that soared just inside the foul pole. Tommy Hunter (1-0) got two outs for the win. Earlier, Baltimore ace Chris Tillman struggled through a 49-pitch first inning that could be attributed in part to a seven-day layoff. The right-hander issued three walks, two with the bases loaded, before getting three outs. Pittsburgh ended Tillmans outing in the fifth when Andrew McCutchen doubled and scored on a triple by Gaby Sanchez for a 3-0 lead. Pedro Alvarez had four hits for the Pirates, finishing a home run short of the cycle. But Pittsburgh stranded 15 and went 5 for 16 with runners in scoring position and lost for the 15th time in 19 games. "We keep fighting and fighting, and we put ourselves in scoring position and we havent been able to cash in the way we need to," manager Clint Hurdle said. "But we keep showing up. The bats were better throughout the series. ... We had men on base throughout the game, and still looking for that big hit." The first game was all about Pearce, designated for assignment by Baltimore on April 22 and released five days later. After turning down an offer from Toronto, the first baseman was re-signed Monday after Chris Davis went on the 15-day disabled list. Pearce singled in the third, fifth and sixth innings of the opener and was solid in the field. "Stevie gave us a real lift," manager Buck Showalter said. Alvarez had two hits and an RBI for the Pirates, who stranded 13 and went 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position. The defeat ended Pittsburghs nine-game road winning streak in interleague play. Trailing 1-0 when the rain stopped play, Baltimore regrouped during the break and sent nine batters to the plate in a three-run fifth. After a single, walk and an error loaded the bases against Charlie Morton (0-4), Pearce hit an RBI single and Ryan Flaherty grounded an opposite-field, two-run single to left field. Pearce singled in a run in the sixth, and Markakis hit his first homer of the season in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. Orioles starter Bud Norris (2-2) allowed one run in 5 1-3 innings, and Hunter got the last out with runners on second and third for his seventh save. Morton started well but came unhinged after the rain delay and lost his fourth consecutive start. The right-hander permitted four runs, two earned, and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. "I kept grooving fast balls to Steve Pearce and he kept putting good swings on them," Morton lamented. NOTES: Pittsburgh returns home to face Toronto on Friday night. ... Orioles LHP Troy Patton returned from a 25-game suspension before the second game. Baltimore also activated Machado from the DL, and optioned INF Steve Lombardozzi and RHP Josh Stinson to Triple-A Norfolk. ... The last time Pittsburgh played a doubleheader on the road was in July 2011, at Washington. ... Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez (right knee inflammation) allowed three runs and four hits over 3 1-3 innings in a rehabilitation assignment for Double-A Altoona against Erie. ... Baltimores rainout against Tampa Bay on April 15 was rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on June 27. Cheap Cowboys Jerseys . Im not going to have any rides before Aintree, but Im feeling great and cant wait to get back, said the jockey.Im riding Dynaste on Thursday, but itll be a fairly quiet day and then it will be all systems go for Friday and Saturday.Scudamore has chosen Ballynagour over two other Pond House inmates in Soll (Conor OFarrell), who has completed in two previous Nationals, and Vieux Lion Rouge (James Reveley). He said: It was a very tough decision as all three have a similar chance.Soll loves it round there, but is higher in the weights now, while Vieux Lion Rouge is an improving young horse.I went for Ballynagour as he has some very strong form with the likes of Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti and his run at Cheltenham suggested he is coming back to form. The riders father, Peter Scudamore, was an eight-times champion jockey, but famously never managed to win the Grand National.Scudamore jnr is well known for showing emotion after riding a big-race winner, but he dare not even dream of landing the biggest prize of them all on Merseyside.I havent even thought about it. Im just concentrating on getting the job done, he said.Ballynagours owner Allan Stennett has been involved with a number of previous Crabbies Grand National runners, most notably Blowing Wind, who he owned in partnership with Peter Deal and John Dale, and finished third in both 2001 and 2002.Stennett said: Ballynagour is a bit like Blowing Wind in that he has good form over shorter distances of between two and a half to three miles. The horse has had a problem with bleeding in some of his races but what he has shown since we have had him is that he does seem to show his best form in the spring. After his run in the Betfred Bowl last year, when he ran Silviniaco Conti to a head, he had me in tears. He appeared to show improved form that day, about 20lb above his handicap mark. Some people questioned the form but I pointed out that he had the likes of Holywell, Smad Place and Menorah behind him. After Aintree last year, he went out to France and won the Grade Two Prix La Barka. Although officially it is a hurdle race, the hurdles at Auteuil are more like fences. We are going to the Crabbies Grand National with him on Saturday and the nerves are jangling! Each week, TSN.ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen and NFL Editors Ben Fisher and Mike Hetherington discuss three hot fantasy football topics. Which dual threat QB will finish with the most fantasy points, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, or Cam Newton? Cullen: If I’m looking ahead to the end of the season, I’m inclined to take the one with the highest ceiling and, to me, that’s Kaepernick. Wilson has been great this year – running more and more effectively – and Newton is something of a one-man show for Carolina, but the reason I choose Kaepernick is that he has more weapons at his disposal. The 49ers have a running game and a far better class of receivers than either Seattle or Carolina have to offer and having the surrounding pieces is important to maximize value. Fisher: Wilson is the safe choice, Kaepernick is the exciting choice, and Newton is the right choice. I like Wilson’s methodical approach in the run game, but he doesn’t offer quite enough in the pass game. Kaepernick will have big games but also some boneheaded performances that will hurt your team. Newton fits somewhere in between but his proven playmaking ability both through the air and on the ground make him the choice for me.. Hetherington: Based on how the 49ers are using him, I’ll go with Colin Kaepernick. Jim Harbaugh has asked Kaepernick to throw the ball more than ever this year, while not limiting his impact in the running game. Though Newton used his legs for over 100 yards against the Bengals, the 2011 first overall pick has been cautious running the football this season and lacks the explosive weapons in the passing game Kaepernick has. Wilson may be the most developed of this bunch, but his value is limited simply due to the presence of the Marshawn Lynch and the commitment to running the football in Seattle. What is WR TY Hilton’s ceiling with Andrew Luck as his quarterback? Cullen: Eventually, the ceiling ought to be pretty high for Hilton, but it still may be another year or two before he’s really going for big yardage and part of that is the Colts still have other options. Reggie Wayne has been targeted 54 times, only five fewer than Hilton, and both of the Colts’ top receivers only have one touchdown, because TE Dwayne Allen and RB Ahmad Bradshaw are scoring. Hilton’s size may work against him as a red-zone target, which means that even if he puts up a 1,500-yard receiving season, he may be hard-pressed to reach double-digit touchdowns – certainly the case this year, but even for the future. Fisher: Andrew Luck gets all the comparisons to Peyton Manning, so it’s only fair that Hilton should get compared to Manning’s favourite target from his Colts days, Marvin Harrison. Hilton deserves it. The third-year receiver won’t put up a 200 point fantasy season this year like Harrison consistently threatened from 1999 all the way until 2006, but as Reggie Wayne continues to age and Indy realizes they don’t need high-end free agent receivers like Hakeem Nicks with Hilton carrying the load, the third-rounder will be among the elite fantasy receivers. Hilton is a stud! Hetherington: As long as Luck remains healthy under centre, the sky is the limit for Hilton. Luck has commanded one of the top scoring offences this season and Hilton appears to be taking the premier role in it. The lone hold back for Hilton is Luck’s commitment to spreading the ball out – seven players have 13 or more catches this season. If Hilton emerges as Luck’s go-to guy, he could emerge as a top-end WR1, but for now I’ll keep him as a high-end WR2, making him a must start each week. Hilton needs to add more touchdowns to become a top-level threat. Is Joe Flacco a QB1? Cullen: Can’t we just ask if Joe Flacco is elite? Ha! When he has a five-touchdown game, sure, the argument can be made for Joe Flacco as QB1, but he’s right on the edge for me. If you’re in a 12-team league, sure he might be a low-end QB1, but probably not in a 10-teamer. It’s a fine line, but I still have a hard time putting him up there, even after a career game. Fisher: Still can’t do it. While Flacco is knocking on the QB1 door after his monster Week 6 performance, I still expect he’ll fall to his middling QB2 numbers of a year ago. Flacco will have a big week from time to time – whether it’s against another defence as incompetent as the Bucs, or maybe his top receiver carries some huge motivation into a game - but there are too many QBs are as good as Flacco at his best every week for the Ravens signal-caller to be considered Top 10. Hetherington: It’s easy to want to buy in to Flacco after his five touchdown performance against the Buccaneers, but Flacco is not a QB1. Flacco’s week-to-week performance is too inconsistent to make him a QB1, instead I see the Super Bowl XLVII MVP as a high-end QB2 who is worth starting in favourable matchups. Speaking of which, Flacco should have another strong day this week against the Falcons, but should not be relied upon as your top QB option every week. Just outside the door, a few stray reporters waited for the morning session to let out as a much larger media contingent swarmed the Maple Leafs locker room four floors below. The hockey club, co-tenants with the Raptors at the Air Canada Centre, had fired their head coach hours earlier. Dwane Casey knew that he and his team were not making headlines in the city on this day. Content with just getting back to work at home after a long road trip, the Raptors coach wasted little time in reestablishing the defensive principles that have been slipping away. It started with defence, he said. Its one of those things that slips when you go for a long period of time without practice. Today was more of a training camp-type practice, which we need more of. Guys responded, had a good day of practice but weve got to carry that over to the games, he continued. And like I challenged the guys today, we should get more emphatic and more upset and [just as] teed off against the other team as we do against each other. If we compete in the games the way we compete in practice, wed be a much better defensive team. So we have to carry that over into game situations. The Raptors, a team that ranked 10th in defence last year and ninth through the first month of this season, have fallen a long way in that category. Only the lowly Knicks and Timberwolves allow more points per 100 possession since the end of November. I think its going to be the emphasis for the next couple of weeks for us with the way coach has been talking and preaching to us, Kyle Lowry said Tuesday. I think were all on the same page where we understand thats how were going to win. Seemingly, the teams improved offence has come at the expense of their defensive prowess, but Casey points to a more specific cause - the noticeable decline that coincides with DeMar DeRozans 18-game absence. Since DeMar has gone down our offensive style has changed a little bit in that were more of a running team, we play a little bit faster, Casey stated. I think that affected our defence somewhat. We had to survive and our offence stepped up and carried us in the games we won on the road trip and the games before we went on the trip, the coach went on. We had to adjust and the way we adjusted was to play a little bit faster, which, in turn, I really know affected our defence. According to NBA.com, the Raptors have actually played at a similar, and even slightly slower ppace since DeRozans injury, but theres no question his time away has shuffled the deck enough to hurt them in various areas on both ends of the floor.dddddddddddd Lowry, one of their hardest working defenders, has been overworked, evident in a pair of lopsided defeats to Golden State and Phoenix at the end of an already tiring road trip. At times during Sundays 16-point loss to the Suns, Casey hid Lowry on P.J. Tucker while combinations of Terrence Ross, Lou Williams and Greivis Vasquez handled the responsibility of guarding Phoenixs talented backcourt duo of Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe. This time home will do me good, Lowry said. Get back in our whirlpools, our treatment centres. We get a chance to be home, relax a lot more, get some good food, not eat hotel food all the time. So its good. Its going to be good for me. Although a 2-4 record is nothing to be ashamed of, given the high degree of difficulty on their recent road trip, those last two losses have left a sour taste in everyones mouth. No, Lowry said emphatically when asked if hes satisfied with the result of the trip. No, not at all. We had a losing record. If you have a losing record on a road trip or in general, its not successful. We won a couple games on the trip, but we wanted more. We wanted to win em all. Emotional, physical or whatever fatigue you have, the league doesnt feel sorry for you, Casey added. Those are the situations we faced in there but theres no excuses in this league. We got our butts whooped, now weve got to come back here and regroup, refocus, especially on the defensive end and get our act together. DeROZAN ON TRACK FOR RETURN Although DeRozan was not present at practice on Tuesday, he remains on track to return later this week. The Raptors guard had been scheduled to undergo a series of routine scans on his healing groin injury. The results of these tests will help determine when hes able to get back on the court - likely on Thursday at home to Charlotte, the teams next game, or Saturday at home to Boston. Its been nearly six weeks since DeRozan sustained his injury, tearing his left adductor longus tendon in a loss to the Mavericks on Nov. 28. Accompanying the team on their recent road trip, he was able to get in a couple full practices last week and should be back in the gym on Wednesday. Hes getting there, Lowry said of his teammate. Hes getting better. So today and tomorrow will be big days for him. I think hes going to come back aggressive whenever he comes back. We cant force feed him. We have to be patient with him. David West scored 25 points, Paul George added 22, and the Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-91 on Sunday night. Indianapolis native Gordon Hayward had 21 points and Derrick Favors scored 17 for the Jazz, nine of them in the first eight minutes as Utah opened a 14-4 lead. A dunk from Favors cut the Pacers lead to 89-86 with a minute left to play, and West missed a jumper to give Utah a chance to tie with 35 seconds remaining. Hayward cut the Indiana lead to one, but Lance Stephenson sank two free throws to seal the win. "This was a mental toughness win," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "I thought we played with extraordinary effort for four quarters." The Jazz made things interesting in the games fourth period thanks to Hayward, who had 10 of his 21 points in the final 15 minutes. His final five points came in the final minutes. Ian Mahinmi came off the bench to score nine points for the Pacers and provide key minutes, as Roy Hibbert struggled to contain Favors. Utah came out of halftime to score eight unanswered points and force Indiana to call an early timeout. The Pacers retook the lead when Mahinmi was fouled on a layup. Mahinmi made the free throw to put Indiana up 60-58. "Ive pretty solid on defence all season long," Mahinmi said. "My shot blocking has been up. My timing is good." CJ Watson, starting for the injured George Hill, scored 13 points for the Pacers. Hill sat out his second straight game with a bruised shoulder. After coming off the bench to score 17 in a win over Boston a night earlier, Evan Turner struggled in his reserve role.ddddddddddddTurner, acquired from Philadelphia on Feb. 20, scored eight points and shot 2 of 9 in 20 minutes. But the Pacers got a boost from Mahinmi and Watson to pull out another win against an opponent they might have easily beaten earlier in the season. After two close tilts against Milwaukee and a come-from-behind victory in Boston on Saturday night, Indiana survived a scare against one of the Wests worst teams. But all night long, Utah buckled under pressure from one of the NBAs best defensive teams. The Jazz finished with 18 turnovers, which led to 24 points for Indiana. George went down hard after being fouled on a drive to the basket late in the third quarter. George slammed to the floor and appeared to hit his head, but remained in the game to sink both free throws. Hayward rebounded from a slow start to put together one of his best games since January. In his fourth time playing in his native city, he shot 8 of 15 from the field after being held scoreless until the beginning of the second period. He scored seven straight points in the third quarter, keeping the Jazz in the game while the rest of the offence sputtered. "I thought I was quiet in the first half, but I was proud of the way we came back and fought against a team with a real good record, especially here at home," Hayward said. Hayward, who led Butler to an NCAA championship game appearance in 2010, averaged 12.2 points on 34.1 shooting in 12 games in February. He came into the game having scored only 21 points in four games in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Swedish mens hockey team capitalized on a quick start and some shaky opposing goaltending to skate to a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic in their opening game of the Olympic tournament at the Bolshoy Ice Dome on Wednesday. Ottawa Senators star defenceman Erik Karlsson scored two goals while his defensive partner Oliver Ekman-Larsson added two assists. Henrik Zetterberg and Patrik Berglund had the other two goals for the Swedes, who jumped to an early 3-0 lead thanks to some suspect goaltending by Czech starter Jakub Kovar. Head coach Alois Hadamczik made the surprising decision to not even dress the teams only NHL goaltender for the teams stiffest test of the preliminary round. Winnipegs Ondrej Pavelec was scratched in favour of KHL goalies Alexander Salak and Jakub Kovar. Kovar got the start, which backfired horribly when he let in three questionable goals before being pulled early in the second and replaced by Salak, who let in the Swedes fourth goal before the Czechs got on the board. Salak settled down after that and kept the Czech Republic in the game, and Marek Zidlicky and Jaromir Jagr scored two quick goals midway through the second period to spark the Czechs. But the Czech Republic couldnt put any more past Swedish goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who kept the lead intact while the Czechs outshot the Swedes 15-5 in the third. Lundqvist made 23 saves for the win, while Kovar and Salak combined for 25 stops in the loss. Swedens next game in Group C is against Switzerland, while the Czech Republic faces Latvia, both on Friday. Quick start from Swedes Sweden carried the play for most of the first period, capitalizing on a couple miscues by Kovar to go ahead 2-0 after 20 minutes. Karlsson scored the opening goal of the Olympic tournament from the point on a delayed penalty halfway through the period, as Kovar struggled to deal with the traffic in front of his net and saw the Swedes shot go through his glove. Berglund made Kovars opening 20 minutes worse by scoring Swedens second goal from a bad angle at 13:17, firing a shot right through the Czech goaltender from outside the left faceoff dot. It didnt get any better for Kovar in the second. Zetterberg scored on another shot that went through the Czech goalie only 51 seconds in. That goal ended Kovars night after Salak came in to replace him. But the switch didnt matter. Karlsson scored his second of the game with a laser from the point with little over three minutes after Salak made his debut. The Czechs clawed their way back into the contest with goals from Zidlicky and Jagr two minutes apart midway through the second, and pushed the Swedes hard for the remainder of the period. TORONTO – Randy Carlyle felt helpless. He tried scores of video, tried highlight reels, tried countless meetings, tried whatever he could think up to alter the manner in which his seemingly unheard message was presented, anything to jolt a win from his team during the organizations longest losing streak (regulation) in more than 25 years. But it didnt work for more than two weeks, challenged all season for that matter. A narrow victory over Calgary Tuesday night wasnt exactly the Mona Lisa he imagined, but it did breathe the slightest gasp of life into the Maple Leafs sputtering playoff hopes. With just five games to go and ground to gain on Detroit and Columbus – both with games in hand – those hopes remain faint, but could become a little more real with a victory over Boston on Thursday night – however unlikely given both teams recent performance. The most crushing of foes for the Leafs in recent years – see: Game 7 – the Bruins have surged to the top of the NHL after a month of March that featured 15 wins in 17 games and just a single loss in regulation. "When you play teams of that caliber, you have to be on the top of your game," Carlyle said, sounding almost envious of the template created by GM Peter Chiarielli and head coach Claude Julien. "Theres a hockey club thats playing very well. If theres one thing that you can look to Boston is they dont really change. They do what they do and they do it as good as anybody in the league. Theyre a top team. They dont change their template." His team hasnt approached anything close to that level of consistency all year, an unpredictable Jekyll and Hyde bunch from October on. Four entirely different stretches have effectively defined whats been a rollercoaster season in Toronto. The Leafs started with 10 wins in their first 14 games, spiraled with 21 losses in the next 32, rebounded with victories in 15 of 22 before spinning out with eight straight losses in regulation ahead of Tuesdays 3-2 win over the Flames. Rarely did they function as imagined – major defensive deficiencies masked – winning games on the shoulders of a scorching top line and No. 1 goaltender, Jonathan Bernier, who thrived under a heavy workload. Of late, those two prime elements have cooled (or been hurt) and the club has otherwise found all kinds of ways to lose, fatalistic errors and bouts of "freeze mode" as Carlyle described it, often defining close defeats. "Even [Tuesday] night we stopped for awhile, but we got through it," he said of a game that saw Calgary rally late in the proceedings. "Those are the tough things and those are the things that make you shake your head and bang your head against the wall why are we doing that?" Carlyle has been shaking his head all season, unable to jive the current group with his imagined template. As they do now, the Leafs looked all but dead in early January, only to reel off 11 wins in 14 games before the Olympic break, propped up mostly by Phil Kessels dominance and Berniers nightly theatrics. Similar lightning in a bottle is now required – along with a dip from fellow wild card contenders – only now time is not on their side. And even five straight wins alone might not be enough to recover from another late season collapse. Yet another biggest game of the year stands front and centre, this against a Boston hockey club that lost in regulation Wednesday for the first time in more than a month, a 2-1 third period lead erased by the pesky Red Wings. Detroit pulled four points in front of Toronto (with a game still in hand) with the victory, leaving Columbus as the most likely target. "I think we all elevate our game against them," Jake Gardiner said of the Bruins, whom the Leafs defeated on Jan. 14. "It seems like were always prepared to play them." And theyll have to be. Their near-dead playoff fates are on the line. Vancouver Canucks Jerseys .Y. -- First, Ryan Miller. Igor Larionov Jersey . The Calgary Stampeders announced both moves on Wednesday. I was still in pain, but I had to go take the chance.Vancouver (11-8-13) won its third straight game and jumped a point ahead of Portland for the fifth and final Western Conference berth. Both teams have two games remaining. The Sounders (19-10-3) remained tied with Los Angeles atop the overall MLS standings. The Galaxy visit FC Dallas on Sunday, then will face Seattle in a home-and-home series.Mannehs goal, off a long pass from Pedro Morales, was the last action of the first half. After scoring, the Whitecaps striker abruptly pulled up, waving off his teammates attempts to celebrate with him, and limped away from the scene clutching his left hip.He sat out the rest of the game with a contusion in his quadriceps, exacerbated by a sudden sprint on the goal so soon after his initial injury. After the match Manneh said he felt that he would be able to play in the Whitecaps next game next week. The Sounders defenders said they were surprised referee Jair Marrufo allowed Manneh back onto the field in a counterattacking situation. They felt it gave Vancouver an unfair advantage, as Seattles Jalil Anibaba and Chad Marshall were left alone to defend. We were all under the impression that Manneh was still off the field, Anibaba said. The next thing we knew, he has the ball and hes running in on goal.Evans, who strayed from his usual position because he thought his direct opponent was off the field, said Marrufo should have waited until the play finished to allow Manneh back on.When were pushing forward, theres always the risk of a counterattack, Evans said. The referee has to wait until the play is done. One year and one day before this match, Manneh scored a hat trick as Vancouver shocked Seattle, 4-1.ddddddddddddAt the time, Manneh was a relatively unknown 18-year-old who turned in a breakout performance in one of the most hostile away environments in the league.Manneh said he remembered that night as he stepped onto the pitch at CenturyLink Field again 366 days later.I had a good feeling. It definitely gave me a lot of confidence coming into this game, Manneh said. Everybody was like, You did it last year. Why not again this year? If we take care of our business, then well get to where we (want to) go. If we dont, we dont deserve to be there. Its irrelevant about what Portland do; weve got to take care of our business. The win was Vancouvers first on the road in 10 attempts, since a 4-3 victory against the chasing Timbers on June 1. The Whitecaps also locked up the Cascadia Cup competition held annually among Seattle, Vancouver and Portland.Vancouver punctuated the win with a series of clearances under pressure as the clock wound down, including a ball headed off the goal-line by Kendall Watson in stoppage time.As the final whistle blew, Vancouvers players jumped off the bench and punched the air jubilantly, rushing onto the field to hug their teammates. Boos rained down from the stands, except from a small patch of Vancouver supporters in the upper deck who made the three-hour drive south. Not many people gave us the opportunity and believed that we could win, but I did, 1,250 (travelling) fans did and the group did, which was the most important thing, Robinson said. Anaheim, CA - The Anaheim Ducks announced on Monday that veteran winger Dany Heatley will miss at least one week with a groin injury. Heatleys setback is the latest in a spate of lower-body issues to strike multiple teams during training camp and the exhibition schedule. Under diminishing ice time, Heatley totaled 12 goals and 16 assists over 76 regular-season games for the Minnesota Wild last season, adding one goal and five assists in 11 postseason appearances. WASHINGTON -- Denard Spans approach with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning proves math pays off. Facing a five-man infield, Span hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth and the Washington Nationals, with Bryce Harper back in the lineup and stealing his first base of the season, rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 Sunday. The Nationals loaded the bases against Seth Maness (0-1) when Danny Espinosa singled through third baseman Matt Carpenters legs with one out for his third hit, Jose Lobaton singled through the right side of the infield and pinch hitter Nate McLouth walked. In his second game since being activated from the seven-day disabled list following a concussion, Span lofted a fly to left field. Espinosa easily beat the throw from Jon Jay, who shifted over from right field as St. Louis brought in an extra infielder. "I counted: one, two, three, four, five," Span said. "Right there I told myself a groundball probably not going to do it. Try to get the ball in the air somehow." After Espinosa crossed home, the Nationals mobbed Span, who suddenly had something else on his mind. "I was screaming so loud, so into the moment, but at the same time Im thinking dont hit me upside the head too hard because I just came off the DL," said the smiling centre fielder, who grounded out with the bases full in the sixth before delivering the game-winner. The Nationals split the four-game series. They had lost eight of the previous nine meetings with the Cardinals going into the series wrap-up. "Thats a play Im expecting to make and a play that I expect myself to make and I didnt make it," Carpenter said of his ninth-inning whiff. "It ended up costing us." Harper started in left field and went 1 for 4. The two-time All-Star was pulled from the game a day earlier for what manager Matt Williams called a "lack of hustle" after he failed to run out a comebacker to the mound. The two spoke before Sundays game. "I sat with him for a couple of minutes in his locker and told him Im confident in him and Im proud of him and he was going to have impact today, which he did," Williams said. Harper had a somewhat different take on the conversation with Williams, as far as length goes. "He just said, Go get em. Thats the three words he said,&qquot; Harper said.dddddddddddd "Its good to get back out there and play and be part of a win." Harper was left stranded at second base as the possible go-ahead run as Anthony Rendon struck out against Pat Neshek in the eighth. Rafael Soriano (1-0) pitched one inning for the win. The Cardinals took an early edge against Stephen Strasburg and led 2-0 going into the seventh. Washington tied the game with four straight singles off reliever Carlos Martinez, including RBI hits from Ian Desmond and Espinosa. Strasburg struck out nine in six innings. Shelby Miller left with the lead after pitching 5 1-3 innings for the Cardinals. He also hit a two-out, RBI double off Strasburg in the fourth. St. Louis starting pitchers recorded an RBI in three of the four games versus Washington. Miller allowed four hits, striking out seven and walking five. Matt Adams doubled twice and scored for the Cardinals. "I was pretty happy we were able to put a couple together and obviously a big hit by Shelby," manager Mike Matheny said. "That gives you a little bit of room and then we get the ball into the hands of guys we like to give the ball to. Good offences are going to put together tough at-bats on tough pitching, and today they got us." True, though it took some doing. Washington left 17 runners on base and went 2 of 12 with runners in scoring position. "Talk about those opportunities and giving ourselves that multiple times in the game, you like your chances, certainly," Williams said. "Especially against a good team like that we want to create those. I dont know how many guys we had on base today but it felt like a lot." NOTES: Cardinals OF Matt Holiday didnt play. It was a day of rest, Matheny said. ...St. Louis will recall LHP Tyler Lyons from Triple-A Memphis to start at the New York Mets and send RHP Jorge Rondon to Memphis before Monday nights series opener. His latest victim called the ban excessive, Maradona suggested on Argentine TV FIFA might as well handcuff him and throw him in Guantanamo and the Uruguayan president suggested a hidden agenda. In banning Luis Suarez for nine international matches and all football related activity for a period of four months and fining him $100,000, FIFA made no provision for mandating the 27-year old Uruguayan to receive the professional help he so evidently requires. FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke stated Friday Suarez should seek treatment is clear evidence the governing body failed in this regard. I cant imagine a scenario in any of our major sports leagues where rehabilitation wasnt a significant aspect of any sanctioning handed down to a repeat offender. FIFA could learn much from the North American model where rehabilitation is an integral aspect of the disciplinary process. Which is a theme picked up by FIFPro, the players global union, who questioned why rehabilitation and professional support was not mandated by FIFA. The first part of that process is taking responsibility. Instead we learned this morning in his statement to the FIFA Disciplinary Panel, Suarez denied he deliberately bit Italys Giorgio Chiellini. "I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent. At that moment I hit my face against the player leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth." During post-match comments to Uruguayan TV Suarez claimed Chiellini bumped into him with his shoulder. This is in stark contrast with video which clearly shows it was Suarez who initiated contact between the players. "Deliberate, intentional and without provocation," was the disciplinary panels conclusion. Which could be the same words used for the two previous Suarez suspensions for biting an opponent. The first of which occurred only months after the world witnessed his deliberate hand-ball in the final minute of Uruguays quarter-final match against Ghana. In doing so Suarez denied opportunity for an African nation to make it to the semifinals of a World Cup for the first time in competition history. In the referees match report from Tuesdays pivotal Group D encounter Marco Rodriguez admits neither he, nor of any of his assistants saw the incident and that that was reason why Suarez was not punished at the time. In time we may well look back at this as the tipping point for introducing video replays. During the FIFA congress which was held in the days leading up to the World Cup Sepp Blatter stunned all in attendance when he introduced the idea of allowing coaches through the course of a match two opportunities to challenge on-field decisions. Goal line technology was introduced for this World Cup as a consequence of not allowing the goal Frank Lampard scored in Englands Round-of-16 match against Germany at South Africa 2010. We saw GLTs worth only four days into Brazil 2014, when France was rightfully awarded a goal in their opening match against Honduras. Another distasteful aspect to all this is the way companies have looked to exploit for commercial gain one of the most unsavoury incidents in World Cup Finals history. The exception to this has been the online poker company who announced yesterday they had terminated their partnership with Suarez. A sizeable crowd of fans including the Uruguayan President had flocked to the airport in Montevideo in support of their ‘hero Thursday night in anticipation of his return home. However Suarez arrived back in Montevideo on a private jet in the early hours of Friday. Avoiding the fanfare and the spotlight in favour of anonymity might just be a first sign Suarez finally understands the full consequence of his irrational actions last Tuesday. Suarez now has to ignore the sentiment of a nation, the loyalty of his manager and the outpouring of sympathy he has received in favour of the wise words from Uruguays original football icon, Alcides Ghiggia. Ghiggia - who scored the winning goal for Uruguay when they beat Brazil in the 1950 World Cup Final - has been outspoken in his criticism of Suarez. Lets hope when Uruguay take to the pitch for the pre-match warm up ahead of Saturday afternoons Round-of-16 match against Colombia they dont wear t-shirts in support of Suarez, as Liverpool players did in December, 2011 when he was given an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester Uniteds Patrice Evra. Instead they hopefully counsel Suarez to admit the errors of his ways and take full responsibility. Only then can he begin the long journey back to the sanctuary of the football pitch. Theyre usually only wrapped around his shoulder, not his calf as well. Despite getting a little physically beat up, Hernandez had no problem shutting down Houston. Seattles ace struck out nine over eight strong innings for his third straight victory, Willie Bloomquist provided a jolt of offence with his first home run since 2011 and the Mariners beat the Astros 6-1 on Friday night. "A little bruise. Im fine," Hernandez said. "He got me, he got me pretty good." An extra bruise on Hernandezs left calf was the only downside to Seattles fourth win in five games that has the Mariners back above the .500 mark. Hernandez (6-1) allowed only five hits and continued a strong last two weeks on the mound. After going more than a month between victories, Hernandez has rediscovered his form. He has struck out 21 and walked just two over his last three starts. Four of his nine strikeouts against the Astros were looking, a sign that he had command off his fastball. "Everything was working," Hernandez said. "I was throwing a lot of strikes. The game plan was just to throw strikes and use a lot of fastballs." Bloomquist drove in three runs, but the highlight was his two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole in the sixth. It was his first long ball since Aug. 10, 2011, when Bloomquist was playing for Arizona, a span of 626 at-bats. Bloomquists homer came on the first pitch after Mike Zunino had doubled off the top of the wall, missing a homer by inches. Bloomquist rounded the bases with a wry smile on his face and appeared to be catching plenty of grief in the dugout for the long lapse between homers. His last homer also came against Houston -- when the Astros were still a National League team -- and led off the bottom of the first inning. "Dont even go there," Bloomquist laughed when asked about his last homer. "I dont want to remember, lets put it that way. Had a lot of ground-rule doubles in the meantime. I know its been a while. Thats not my swiing, but Ill take them when they come if they ever come.dddddddddddd" Kyle Seager also drove in three runs with a two-run single in the first and a broken-bat blooper in the seventh. Robinson Cano also had two hits, raising his batting average to .326. The only batter to cause Hernandez fits was Jose Altuve, who improved to 8-for-16 all-time against Seattles ace. Altuve had an RBI single in the third, doubled in the fifth and lined a single off Hernandezs calf in the eighth. Hernandez stayed in and started an inning-ending double play from Dexter Fowler for his final batter. It was the second straight start Hernandez pitched eight innings. "Felix was pretty darn good tonight in a lot of different ways," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Certainly with his pitch count he was very efficient and he fielded the ball with his glove and his leg." Houstons Rudy Owens made his major league debut after getting called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on short notice. The Astros decided to skip Brad Peacocks scheduled start after he experienced soreness in his forearm. Owens struggled through the first inning then settled down. He kept Houston within 3-1 heading into the sixth despite allowing a baserunner in every inning. The game got away from Owens (0-1) in just a couple of pitches. After giving up the double to Zunino, Owens watched Bloomquist hit the first pitch out. Owens was optioned back to Oklahoma City after the game. Hamilton homered and drove in three runs, Mike Trout also went deep and the Angels regained the best record on baseball, beating the Oakland Athletics 9-4 on Sunday night. Scott Kazmir (14-6) matched his season highs in runs (seven) and hits (10) in three-plus innings. "There were times I felt I could take control of the game, get two strikes on a guy and then throw one right down the middle," Kazmir said. "I felt like I wasnt aggressive enough." Aybar contributed a two-run double when the Angels got to Kazmir for three runs in the second. Calhoun doubled home Aybar for a 3-0 lead. On Saturday night sources confirmed to TSN, the league and players agreed to terms on a new, tentative CBA, pending ratification by the unions players. A league source confirmed the CFLs board of governors must also ratify any potential agreement. We are just four days into the tournament, but there has been no shortage of talking points at Brazil 2014 both on and off the pitch. The goals have been flowing with 37 scored through the first 11 matches, making it the highest scoring World Cup since 1958. Here are the top five things that caught my attention in the tournament so far. 1. Pain for Spain There really was no bigger story for me during the opening days of the tournament than the remarkable fall of the defending Champions Spain at the hands of the Netherlands. It wasnt just the size of the win by the Dutch in a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final, it was the manner of the victory that shook the soccer world. Four goals is the biggest margin of defeat for a defending Champion in World Cup history. From Robin Van Persies stunning diving header, to Arjen Robbens exceptional two-goal performance it was an incredible, clinical display from the Netherlands, and they could have finished with more goals. All of this came after Spain had taken the lead, and almost went 2-0 up just before RVPs equalizer. However, as impressive as the Dutch were, much of the surprise was about how Spain crumbled. In the second half, the defending World and European Champions looked anything but. The performance of the normally reliable Iker Casillas was just one black mark on a bad afternoon at the office for the Spaniards, and a late miss from close range by Fernando Torres summed up a bleak afternoon. Spain lost their first match in 2010 and went on to win the World Cup. It will be fascinating to see how they respond this time around. 2. Magical Messi There was much talk heading into the tournament about Lionel Messis status as one of the true soccer greats. Can he be on a pedestal alongside the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona if he doesnt win a World Cup? Messi showed on Sunday night what we have seen many times before for Barcelona. Whatever the game, whoever is around him, he has the ability to single-handedly influence the outcome. Argentina were not at their best against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and neither was Messi, but with his team holding a slender one goal advantage against the World Cup newcomers, Messi scored a fantastic goal, leaving defenders trailing in his wake. It was a piece of individual brilliance that provided a spark needed by his team. Whether Messi wins the tournament or not is irrelevant to me - he has already shown plenty for both club and country to be classed as one of the Worlds elite players of all time. 3. Young Lions I didnt expect much from England heading into the tournament, but I was pleasantly surprised by their performance in the 2-1 defeat to Italy on Saturday night. With young attacking flair, they looked dangerous going forward, and despite losing the match showed there is much to look forward to in the future.dddddddddddd Raheem Sterling certainly repaid the faith shown by England boss Roy Hodgson with the Liverpool teenager putting in an excellent performance. One of the big debates afterwards was the performance of Wayne Rooney. He missed an excellent chance with England down 2-1 but struggled to influence the game from an unfamiliar position wide on the left. If England are to be successful, they need to get the best out of Rooney, and Im not sure that position will enable that to happen. With Costa Ricas surprise victory over Uruguay, it leaves the group wide open. Italy will be favourites to advance in first place. England will need to tighten up defensively but if they can produce similar attack-minded performances in their next two matches, I think they have a good chance to advance. 4. Croatia Robbed After all the build up to the World Cup, when the action finally began, it was a massive letdown that the post-game talking point was about refereeing and a controversial penalty. Neymar and Oscar produced star performances as the host nation got off to a winning start, but the game really turned Brazils way when Dejan Lovren was judged to have fouled Fred in the box. It should never have been a penalty. The contact was minimal, and Fred flopped like an Olympic diver, but Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura pointed to the spot and the penalty gave Brazil the lead they needed to settle some nerves. It was a very poor decision, but fortunately in the days that followed, the action has been so good that the officials have not been the centre if attention. However, Croatian fans will find it difficult to forgive and forget as they were in the game until the referee changed the course of the match. 5. Ouch! Poor old Gary Lewin. Immediately after Daniel Sturridge scored Englands levelling goal in the first half against Italy on Saturday night, cameras zoomed in on the touch line near the England bench. A crowd of people, including medics, were huddled around someone who was lying flat out on the floor. At first there was confusion. Who was it? What had gone wrong? Turns out the man down injured was actually the England physio! Gary Lewin had hurt himself while celebrating Englands goal. He jumped up, landed on a water bottle and dislocated his ankle. It was an embarrassing situation at the time, but it will leave Lewin with a good story in years to come of how he injured himself during a World Cup match and had to be stretchered off! Roy Hodgson confirmed the injury after the match and also that Lewins World Cup is over. A disappointing end for the physio, but at least he will have expert help on hand throughout his recovery. BEREA, Ohio - Desmond Bryant knew he had to make some major changes to his lifestyle. Really, he had no choice or there could be devastating consequences. "A heart surgery will make you kind of realize you need to start doing things right, especially diet wise," Bryant said. "Ive really cleaned things up a little bit. So far, so good." Bryants comeback from a major health scare continued Wednesday when the Browns defensive lineman returned practiced for the first time since having a procedure in December to fix an irregular heartbeat — a condition he has had for years — that led to him having his first season with Cleveland cut short. On Dec. 6, Bryant underwent a cardiac ablation, an operation that involves a catheter being inserted to destroy a small area of bad heart tissue. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder had at least two episodes last season when his heart raced out of control, including once during an Oct. 3 game against Buffalo. Bryant was hospitalized overnight and the 29-year-old had a recurrence two months later following a home loss to Jacksonville. It was then that Bryant, who was forced to leave a 2012 game for Oakland with a fast heart rate and light-headedness, was advised to undergo the ablation. "I felt like after I experienced what I did on the field that it was finally time to do something to fix that," Bryant said. "So while it was a trying time, I was also excited to get this procedure done and put this behind me. Since then, Ive been training and feeling real well. "Im back. Im healthy." Bryant missed the first minicamp practice on Tuesday for personal reasons, but joined his teammates for their second workout, which was held inside again because of rain and wet grounds. Bryant was welcomed back by everyone, including linebacker Quentin Groves, who also had a heart ablation in 2008. Groves condition was first diagnosed when he was in college but he didnt decide to have the procedure until it was spotted again at the NFL combine. "Its kind of scary not knowing what it is," Groves said. "The way it was explained to me when I had my procedure, the doctor told me one day you could not wake up. I was like, Well, OK, if I was your son, what would you do? He said, I would have the procedure done. "Anytime someone plays with your heart, youre kind of scared." Groves spoke with Bryant before he had the operation, and joked that he had to comfort his big teammate. "Des is a big baby. I have to rock him to sleep at night. No, Im just kidding," Groves said. "I just told him, Its a fairly simple procedure. I recommend you get it done. Im proud that you got it done before it became a problem for you." Bryant wasnt anxious about the operation. He was most fearful during the episodes when his heart raced. "I would feel like I had a fast heart rate and the next thing I know I was going to the hospital," he said. "That was the only real scary thing." Bryant was one of the biggest off-season acquisitions in 2013 by the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $34 million free agent contract. Bryant had an immediate impact, recording two sacks and a career-high 10 tackles in the opener against Miami. He was Clevelands best defensive lineman through four games, but his production fell off sharply following his hospitalization. He finished with 3 1/2 sacks in 12 games. Bryant, though, doesnt know if theres a direct correlation between his drop-off and heart ailment. Hes excited about the new defensive scheme brought in by coach Mike Pettine. "Theyve got a few wrinkles here and there that kind of switch things up that really make it challenging for offences," he said. "I cant wait to continue to grow and learn in this system and see where this will take us." Does he fit in it? "Absolutely," he said with a smile. "Im a good fit for any defence." NOTES: TE Keavon Milton worked out with the offensive linemen for the first time. The 6-foot-4, 293-pounder wore No. 63 after wearing No. 83 on Tuesday. ... After briefly considering a name change, Browns safety Donte Whitner will not drop the W and go by Hitner. "I didnt want to go through changing my credit cards, mortgages and cars," he said.
